Vintage 6’6″ Japanese Custom Step-Up Shortboard This is a high-performance, custom-shaped polyurethane (PU) surfboard from the Japanese brand Sea Eagle, crafted in the famous surf hub of Taito, Chiba. Measuring 6’6″ x 21″, it features a classic thruster (3-fin) setup with traditional FCS fin boxes, a pointed nose, a clean center wood stringer, and a tapered pin tail. Built specifically for holding speed and line control in larger, faster, or hollow waves, it shows heavy aesthetic sun-yellowing and minor surface scuffs but remains an authentic piece of classic Japanese surf engineering.

Shape, Design & Performance

This surfboard is a classic Step-Up / Semi-Gun shortboard built for intermediate to advanced riders tackling serious wave conditions. Coming in at 6 feet 6 inches long and 21 inches wide, its silhouette prioritizes control and drive over loose, small-wave play.

  • The Nose & Entry Rocket: Features a highly tapered, sharp pointed nose with a subtle entry rocker designed to prevent “pearling” (nosediving) when dropping down steep, fast-moving wave faces.

  • The Tail & Rails: It tapers down smoothly into a sleek rounded pin tail. A pin tail provides maximum hold and stability inside the barrel or on high-speed carving turns, preventing the board from sliding out in powerful surf.

  • Fin Configuration: Features a standard Thruster (3-fin) setup utilizing original, dual-tab FCS plug boxes. The thruster layout offers the perfect balance of predictable tracking, drive, and control.

Origin & Craftsmanship

The board is an authentic vintage import with deep roots in Japanese surf culture. The crisp black laminate logo reads “Sea Eagle”, accented by the sub-text “TAITO CHIBA”. Taito Beach, located in the Chiba prefecture, is legendary for its powerful beach breaks and hosting major international surfing competitions.

The hand-written shaper’s signature along the central wooden stringer (202-07-6.2x19...) verifies that this is a custom, hand-glassed piece of craftsmanship rather than a generic, mass-produced factory pop-out.

Material Construction & Condition

  • Construction: Built using traditional Polyurethane (PU) foam core wrapped in fiberglass and polyester resin. It features a single central wood stringer running from nose to tail to handle flex and structural stress.

  • Cosmetic Condition: The board displays significant, uniform UV yellowing (also known as sun-tanning) across the entire resin shell. This is a natural aging process for vintage PU boards that affects the color but doesn’t ruin the ride.

  • Physical Condition: The fiberglass exhibits typical light pressures, minor rail scuffs, and wax residue consistent with active use. The fin plugs, leash plug, and structural nose/tail tips appear solid, making it highly functional for the water or an excellent rustic, maritime display piece for coastal decor.
